In a tragic incident, a young man identified as Benjamin Agaba set himself on fire near the entrance of Uganda's Parliament. Eyewitnesses report that Agaba, before committing the act, claimed he had not received support from his party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM). This event underscores the growing tensions and frustrations among some NRM members regarding internal support and party dynamics.
In recent times, there have been several protests and demonstrations related to party decisions and national governance. For instance, in September 2024, three activists were remanded after staging a half-naked protest near Parliament, demanding the resignation of Speaker Anita Among over corruption allegations. Similarly, in 2024, NRM youths stormed Parliament protesting the rejection of the Age Limit Bill by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
Agaba's drastic action highlights the internal struggles and the lengths to which some members feel compelled to go to voice their grievances.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident, and the NRM has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.
