Pakwach – May 14, 2025A Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit has been abducted by suspected members of the Congolese Army during a routine patrol in Dei Subcounty, Pakwach District.
The incident occurred along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border, where the soldier was reportedly intercepted by Congolese forces.
According to preliminary reports, the attackers seized his firearm, 120 rounds of ammunition, a patrol boat, and its engine before taking him across the border into DRC territory.West Nile regional police spokesperson confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing under reference number SD 03/14/05/2025. “We are working closely with relevant security agencies and local leaders to establish the circumstances and secure the safe return of our officer,” the spokesperson said.
The abduction has heightened tensions along the borderline, which has long been a hotspot for cross-border conflicts, illegal fishing activities, and territorial disputes.Authorities have urged the public, especially residents in the Dei and Panyimur areas, to remain calm but vigilant. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is encouraged to report to the nearest police post or security unit.
Efforts are also underway at the diplomatic level to engage DRC counterparts and address the violation of Uganda’s territorial integrity.This incident adds to a growing list of security concerns on Uganda’s western frontier, underscoring the need for strengthened cross-border collaboration and enhanced patrol coordination.
