The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has called for an urgent meeting with various media houses and broadcasters over an increasing wave of content that is deemed to contain hate speech.

In a letter dated February 25, 2025, and signed by the UCC Executive Director, Nyombi Thembo, the Commission expressed grave concern over the rising instances of media broadcasts promoting divisive and inflammatory content.

The letter, addressed to all broadcasters, the Chairpersons of the National Association of Broadcasters, the Rural Broadcasters Association, the Uganda Media Owners Association, the Independent Online Journalists Association, and the Online Media Publishers Association, underscores the importance of responsible media practices. UCC has emphasized that such content undermines national unity and threatens peace, urging all stakeholders to be vigilant in maintaining ethical broadcasting standards.

UCC’s swift action signals the Commission's commitment to safeguarding the public from harmful media practices and ensuring that the broadcasting environment remains conducive to national harmony. The meeting's outcome may lead to stricter regulations and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.
