Arua, Uganda
The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network) has today launched a powerful new study report titled “Unsafe and Unheard: Shining the Light on the Working Conditions of Women Market Vendors in Arua City.” The event, held at Hotel Le Confidentiel in Arua, brought together women leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives, and community advocates in a shared call for action to improve the lives of women working in the informal sector.
Under the theme “Stronger Together: Building Collective Power for Women in the Informal Sector,” the launch created a platform to discuss the daily challenges women market vendors face—including unsafe working environments, economic insecurity, and gender-based discrimination—and to explore collective solutions that can ensure dignity, safety, and fairness for all.
Speaking at the event, SIHA Network representatives emphasized that women in the informal economy play an essential role in sustaining local economies, yet continue to experience systemic neglect and exploitation. The report, which draws from extensive research and firsthand accounts, highlights the urgent need for policy reforms, improved infrastructure, and recognition of women’s rights within markets and public spaces.
“Empowering women in the informal sector is not just about improving livelihoods—it’s about justice, equity, and social transformation,” a SIHA official noted during the presentation.
Participants shared experiences and strategies for building solidarity among market women, advocating for better working conditions, and amplifying women’s voices in decision-making processes.
The report’s release marks a significant step toward strengthening grassroots women’s movements in Uganda and across the Horn of Africa. SIHA Network reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside women market vendors to ensure that their rights, safety, and economic contributions are respected and valued.
