Elavu, Omugo Sub County – Terego District
A significant Restoration Event held on 28th November in Elavu shone a spotlight on the ongoing fight against land injustice affecting widows and orphans in Terego District, with community leaders urging urgent action and cultural reform.

The event, organised by Redeem International, focused on the case of Tulda Refina, a widow whose land and property were allegedly vandalised and taken by her in-laws in 2021.
After the failure of local mechanisms to resolve the issue, Redeem International stepped in, offering legal and community support that eventually led to the demarcation of her land and the planting of official land markers, restoring her rightful ownership.
Speaking at the event, the LC5 representative praised Redeem International for standing with the widow through her most difficult moments—work he said should ideally have been done by government structures.
He encouraged community members to support widows, respect their rights to property following the death of their husbands, and called on elders to begin allocating land to girls as a way to break cycles of inequality and vulnerability.

The event was also attended by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), a female representative, who expressed strong disappointment that practices such as widow land grabbing and widow inheritance still persist in the district.
She urged community members to report such violations promptly to authorities, emphasising that timely reporting enables effective intervention.
The Assistant RDC further encouraged parents to take advantage of government education opportunities—UPE and USE—noting that many of these injustices thrive because of ignorance.

She stressed the need for educating children to empower future generations and reduce exploitation.
A representative of Redeem International thanked the organisation for its commitment to helping the widow overcome a traumatic situation.

She reaffirmed Redeem’s dedication to defending the rights of widows and orphans, restoring dignity, and promoting justice in communities across West Nile.
The event drew elders, youth, community leaders, and survivors, many of whom praised the initiative as a major step toward community-led accountability and long-term protection for vulnerable individuals.
