Retired Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition figure, has formally applied for bail before the International Crimes Division of the High Court. In his application, filed on February 27, 2025, Besigye cites his advanced age of 68 and deteriorating health due to the harsh conditions at Luzira Prison, where he has been detained since November 2024.
Besigye, along with his aide Haji Obeid Lutale and UPDF officer Capt. Denis Oola, faces charges of treason and misprision of treason. The prosecution alleges that between 2023 and November 2024, the trio conspired to overthrow the Ugandan government by force, holding meetings in various international locations, including Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala.
In his bail application, Besigye emphasizes his commitment to the legal process, noting his history of complying with previous bail conditions in similar cases. He also highlights the indefinite nature of his pre-trial detention, as investigations remain incomplete, leaving the duration of his remand uncertain.
The charges against Besigye have drawn significant international attention. Organizations such as Amnesty International have called for his immediate release, arguing that his detention undermines democracy and human rights.
As the legal proceedings continue, Besigye's legal team remains hopeful that the High Court will grant bail, allowing him to receive necessary medical care and prepare for his defense against the serious charges he faces.
