Brigadier General Richard Tukachungurwa, who as Judge Advocate repeatedly clashed with human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza during Dr Kizza Besigye’s controversial treason trial, has been appointed Head of the General Court Martial.


Brigadier-General Richard Tukachungurwa, the military officer who clashed with human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza during the 2025 treason trial of opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, has been promoted to Head of the General Court Martial.

The November 25 appointment by President Museveni sees Brig Tukachungurwa replace Brigadier Robert Freeman Mugabe, whose second one-year term expired on June 9.As Judge Advocate during the trial (advisor to the court), Tukachungurwa oversaw proceedings in which lawyer Kizza was physically prevented from taking his place among the defense counsel, arrested in court, and summarily convicted of contempt of court—receiving a nine-month prison sentence.
