Kampala, Uganda – Tuesday, February 11, 2025

Confirmed reports indicate that Mr. Luwemba Muhammad, the former Personal Assistant to outgoing Kawempe North MP Ssegirinya Muhammad, will run as an independent candidate in the upcoming by-election.

Luwemba’s decision comes after he failed to secure the National Unity Platform (NUP) party ticket, which was awarded to Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola.

Luwemba will, however, enter the race with the backing of the Democratic Alliance group, led by Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, the Commissioner of Parliament and former NUP Vice President for Buganda. The alliance, which consists of influential political figures, is expected to provide him with strategic and logistical support.

Speaking on his decision, Luwemba said he remains committed to the people of Kawempe North and will run on a platform of service, accountability, and development.

“I have listened to the voices of the people, and I cannot turn my back on them. My campaign will be about real leadership that delivers results,” he said.

The by-election is already shaping up to be highly competitive, with NUP’s official flag bearer Elias Nalukoola considered a strong contender. With Luwemba now in the race, political dynamics in Kawempe North are likely to shift, as he enjoys significant grassroots support, particularly among those who were loyal to the outgoing MP Ssegirinya.

Observers believe Luwemba’s entry could divide the opposition vote, making the election even more unpredictable. The Electoral Commission is yet to announce the official election date, but campaigns are expected to kick off in full force in the coming days.
