Agago, Uganda – May 11, 2025 – A solemn and historic moment unfolded in Patongo, Agago District, as St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Kal Aloi was officially consecrated in a vibrant liturgical ceremony led by the Most Rev. Raphael P’Mony Wokorach, Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese. The church, a gift from the family of Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, was constructed in honour of his late parents, Mzee Kasmiro Ongom Ityangaluk Lobeyong and Mego Paulina Angom Atapangiro. The new house of worship stands as a lasting testament to their lives and legacy.

Speaking emotionally during the event, Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo shared the deep personal motivation behind the gesture:

“I built a church for my mother because she was a very hard-working woman and a staunch lay faithful in the Church. Although she came from a Protestant [Anglican] family, she accepted to be baptised in the Catholic Church,” he said.

The consecration was graced by a high-level judicial delegation led by Deputy Chief Justice, Dr. Flavian Zeija, and Ag. Principal Judge, Lady Justice Okuo Jane Kajuga. Dr. Pius Bigirimana, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Judiciary, led a team of non-judicial officers, while Acting Chief Registrar, HW Lamunu Pamella Ocaya, headed members of the Lower Bench in attendance. In his homily, Archbishop Wokorach highlighted the vital role of spiritual leadership in fostering unity and gratitude among the faithful.

“As we bless this church, we also give thanks for the countless blessings God has poured upon us as the Parish of Patong,” he said, calling for reflection on the spirit of communion.

He warned against jealousy, which he described as a divisive force that undermines community and disrupts the Holy Spirit’s work in building a loving and united Church.

The event drew a wide range of attendees, including officials from the Executive and Parliament, religious and civic leaders, and members of the public who filled the church grounds in celebration of this remarkable contribution to the spiritual life of the community.

The consecration of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church marks a significant milestone not only for the parishioners of Kal Aloi and Patongo but also for the broader narrative of faith, family, and legacy in Uganda.
