Arua City leaders have called for continued development support from the German government to address growing infrastructure and service delivery needs, as the city hosts a high-level German cooperation delegation to assess ongoing investments.

The delegation, which visited Arua on November 4, 2026, comprised representatives from Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KfW and GIZ.

During engagements with city political and technical leaders, the delegation toured key infrastructure interventions under the KfW-supported Climate Resilient Project Arua, estimated at approximately UGX 90 billion.

Arua City Mayor Lawrence Alionzi commended the German government for its continued contribution to urban development but appealed for additional support, citing increasing pressure on infrastructure and public services due to the growing population and influx of refugees.

Alionzi highlighted the need for improved water supply, modern waste management facilities, better roads, youth skilling, job creation, an industrial park and improved urban planning.

The city leadership also called for inclusive service delivery that caters for both host communities and refugees, while strengthening Arua's position as a regional commercial hub serving West Nile, neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

City Town Clerk Vincent Okurut appreciated the development partnership and pledged that city authorities would ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation and utilisation of the support.

The Resident City Commissioner also emphasised the importance of the projects in addressing the city's development priorities.Joachim Schimtz, representing Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, said the partnership was rooted in more than five decades of diplomatic and development cooperation between Uganda and Germany, noting that Arua had become an important focus of their development interventions.

The approximately UGX 90 billion KfW-supported project, with support from the European Union and other implementing partners, focuses on climate-resilient urban infrastructure, including water supply, sanitation, waste management and ecosystem protection.

The investments are expected to improve urban services, strengthen environmental protection and enhance the city's capacity to respond to its growing development needs.

Arua City leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with development partners to promote sustainable urban growth and improve the livelihoods of residents.
