Uganda Police have confirmed that 63 people have died and several others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred early Wednesday morning on the Gulu–Kampala Highway.
The accident happened at around 12:15 a.m. at Kitaleba Village, near Asili Farm, and involved four vehicles — two passenger buses, a lorry, and a saloon car.
According to a police statement, the vehicles involved include:
UBF 614X, Isuzu Bus (Nile Star Coaches)
UAM 045V, Isuzu Bus (Planet Company)
UBK 647C, Tata Lorry
CGO 5132AB 07, Toyota Surf
How the Tragic Crash Happened
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Nile Star bus, traveling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake a Tata Lorry at Kitaleba. At the same time, another bus from the opposite direction (Planet Company) was also overtaking a Toyota Surf.
The two buses collided head-on, triggering a chain reaction that involved all four vehicles.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Traffic officers from Nakasongola District and emergency services swiftly responded to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting reckless overtaking and speeding as possible factors.
> “We urge all drivers to exercise maximum caution and patience on the road, especially during night travel,” police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in the statstatement.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to visit nearby hospitals and mortuaries to help identify victims.
