A 100-day joint enforcement operation targeting commuter taxis in Dangerous Mechanical Condition (DMC) has started today, Monday, August 24, 2026, across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The operation, dubbed “Operation Ganyegenya,” follows a directive by Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama to the Uganda Police Force to remove unsafe public service vehicles from the roads.
The exercise will particularly target dilapidated 14-seater commuter taxis commonly known as “Ganyegenya.” Severely damaged vehicles found to be in dangerous mechanical condition could be permanently removed from service.
Minister Byamukama said public transport must be safe, roadworthy and fit for purpose, warning that poorly maintained vehicles should not put the lives of road users at risk.
However, taxi operators have appealed to the minister to give them more time to repair their vehicles. They argue that an immediate crackdown could affect their livelihoods, particularly with families facing school-fee obligations.
The enforcement operation is expected to run for 100 days, with authorities maintaining that the primary objective is to improve road safety and ensure that public transport vehicles operating in the metropolitan area meet required safety standards.
