The WENRECO Primary Education Initiative has registered encouraging results in its first year of implementation, with 21 pupils attaining first grades in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

Launched in 2024 by West Nile’s electricity distributor, WENRECO, the initiative seeks to strengthen the academic performance of Primary Seven candidates through regular assessments, teacher training and improved preparation for national examinations.

WENRECO spokesperson Lillian Ayot says the programme was designed to help learners improve their understanding of the syllabus and develop better question interpretation skills.

Ayot says more than 10 assessments were conducted this year to monitor learners’ progress, identify learning gaps and prepare candidates for the national examinations.

In partnership with West Nile Education Solutions, WENRECO also supported teacher training, an intervention that contributed to the 21 first grades recorded in the 2025 PLE.

West Nile Education Solutions Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Etoma says bringing pupils from different schools together to sit common assessments encourages healthy competition and motivates learners to improve their academic performance.

Etoma notes that the shared assessment approach exposes pupils to different learning environments and challenges them to perform beyond the standards of their individual schools.

The initiative began in Maracha District in 2024, covering only three schools. In 2025, it was expanded to five districts: Arua, Terego, Zombo, Maracha and Koboko, with three schools selected from each district.

The expansion reflects WENRECO’s commitment to supporting education in the West Nile sub-region through partnerships aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening the capacity of both teachers and pupils.

The programme is expected to continue supporting schools through structured assessments and teacher development as stakeholders seek to improve performance in future national examinations.
