Kampala, Uganda | May 21, 2025 – The Vatican has officially announced the reassignment of Archbishop Luigi Bianco, who has served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda since 2019. 

The seasoned Vatican diplomat has been appointed as the Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Apostolic Delegate to Kosovo.Archbishop Bianco's departure marks the end of a nearly six-year diplomatic mission in Uganda, where he played a significant role in strengthening relations between the Holy See and the Ugandan government, as well as the local Catholic Church. 

He was widely respected for his diplomatic tact and spiritual leadership during a period marked by both social and political challenges in the region.The announcement was made by the Vatican Press Office on Tuesday, and while a successor for the Uganda posting has yet to be named, the Catholic community in Uganda has expressed gratitude for Archbishop Bianco's service and wished him well in his new assignment.

During his tenure, Archbishop Bianco was a key figure in several Church initiatives, including efforts to promote peace, social justice, and interfaith dialogue. He also maintained strong ties with the Uganda Episcopal Conference and regularly engaged with local dioceses across the country.

The appointment to Slovenia and Kosovo is seen as a significant diplomatic move, reflecting the Vatican’s trust in Archbishop Bianco’s experience and ability to manage complex religious and political landscapes.The Apostolic Nuncio serves as the Pope’s ambassador to a given country, acting as both a liaison between the Holy See and the local Church, and as a diplomatic envoy to the host nation's government.Until a new Nuncio is appointed, the duties of the position in Uganda will likely be handled by a chargé d'affaires or interim representative.
