Nebbi, Uganda – Phiona Nyamutoro, the State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), has officially declared her intention to run for the Nebbi District Woman Representative seat in Uganda’s upcoming 2026 general elections.
Her announcement marks the beginning of what is expected to be a high-stakes contest within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Currently serving as the National Youth Representative in the 11th Parliament, Nyamutoro’s candidacy sets the stage for a political face-off with the incumbent, Agnes Acibu, also an NRM member.
The contest is already drawing significant attention, signaling a potential shift in the district's political dynamics.Nyamutoro chose Mother’s Day to unveil her bid, coupling her political ambition with a tribute to the nurturing spirit of women in the region.
In a post shared on her X (formerly Twitter) platform, she stated, “Nebbi has mothered many great and significant citizens for our nation, and now it’s time for me to shine. Happy Mother’s Day!”Beyond her legislative experience, Nyamutoro brings a unique crossover appeal, bolstered by her public association with celebrated Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo.
This connection, along with her active involvement in youth affairs, may enhance her resonance with younger voters and broaden her support base.As the race for the Nebbi Woman MP seat intensifies, all eyes will be on how this intra-party rivalry unfolds and what it could mean for the broader NRM landscape in West Nile.
