Makindu, Mukono District – May 5, 2025 — A tragic road accident has claimed multiple lives after a YY Coaches bus, registration number UAV 702J, overturned and burst into flames in Makindu Village, Najja Sub County, along the Mukono-Katosi Road.

The bus, which was reportedly en route from Kampala to Mbale City, lost control under unclear circumstances, veered off the road, and overturned before catching fire. Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, causing panic and chaos in the area.

While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, local authorities and emergency responders on the scene fear that many passengers may have perished in the blaze. Several others were rushed to nearby health facilities with varying degrees of injuries.

Residents and Good Samaritans reportedly attempted to rescue passengers trapped in the burning bus, but the fire spread rapidly, hindering efforts. “It was horrifying. The fire was too intense, and we couldn’t do much,” said one witness at the scene.

The Uganda Police Force and Uganda Red Cross have launched a rescue and recovery operation and are working to identify the deceased and injured. Preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.

Traffic on the Mukono-Katosi Road has since been diverted as authorities secure the area and clear the wreckage.

YY Coaches has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
