Elderly community members in Arua City have committed to applying digital safety and security skills acquired during a two-day training aimed at protecting them from cyber-related crimes as they navigate the digital space.

The elders made the commitment at the closure of the training held at Muni University, organized by the National ICT Hub to equip older persons with knowledge and practical skills to safely use smartphones and computers.

The training comes amid growing concerns over cyber-related crimes globally, with older persons increasingly considered vulnerable to online threats due to limited digital literacy.

Dr. David Turahi Kyomuhendo, a former Director of Information Technology and Information Management Services at the Ministry of ICT, who is currently championing digital skills promotion among the elderly, described the training as timely, noting that older persons have long been left out of digital literacy initiatives.

He emphasized the importance of empowering the elderly with the knowledge needed to use digital platforms safely and confidently.

The two-day training targeted elderly persons, particularly those aged 60 years and above, equipping them with skills to recognize and guard against online threats while using digital devices.

The initiative was organized by the National ICT Hub in partnership with Ngura Consult and the Muni University Business Incubation Center.

The organizers hope the training will promote safer digital practices among older persons and enable them to benefit from technology while minimizing their exposure to cybercrime.
